The first week is halfway finished, and today is the first soccer game of the season. The students and I are getting to know each other this week, but with full IPS classes, there are a lot of students to get to know! Yesterday we had students complete surveys to help me speed up the process, and I was glad to see so many of the students starting the year with a good attitude about wanting to work harder in their classes.
In IPS today, we acted out the worst case scenarios for violations of lab safety rules. Some students really had fun with it, and some really struggled in front of a group. The groups that had the easiest time were the groups with the best leaders. Group work needs someone who is willing to organize roles and pull the rest of the members together for a common goal. I see this on the soccer field every day, but it is a skill that has its place during the school day as well. The APES class also completed an activity that brought out many group dynamics as they made decisions about how to use resources for a fictional town. As students are encouraged to be more collaborative in their learning environments, I hope to develop these leadership skills in even more students.
